Taste of Carolina 2013
Fifteen restaurants will showcase their best offerings Friday at theTaste of Carolina Cuisine fundraiser in Clayton. Sponsored by the Woman’s Club of Clayton, the event is 6:30-10 p.m. at The Clayton Center, 111 E. Second St. Proceeds will be distributed to supported projects and organizations in the community.
Attendees will move from station to station, sampling taste-size portions from exhibiting restaurants. In addition to serving their own “tastes of Carolina,” 15 restaurants compete for seven awards, including “Best Presentation,” “Best Pasta,” “Most Original,” “Best Use of Local Ingredients,” “Best Dessert” and “People’s Choice, 1st and 2nd.”
Many attendees also make it a personal challenge to see how many different food tables they can visit over the course of the evening. “The food is
so good you don’t want to miss any,” said Linda Strevig, co-chairwoman of the event. “I usually can only make it over to three or four. It’s just a really fun evening.”
Participating restaurants include Clayton Steakhouse, Mulberry on Main, Skylines, La Cocina, and McKinley’s Irish Pub. Staff members from Wake Technical College Culinary School will select the five “Best” awards. Ticketholders will vote on the people’s choices.
In addition to the tastings, there will be a silent auction, live entertainment and dancing. The auction will feature nearly 75 items, including paintings by Janie Prete of Clayton and Jo Lee Tucker of Four Oaks. Also up for bidding is jewelry from Main Street Jewelers and ticket packages from the Clayton Center.
Scheduled performers include Bruce Naegelen, Michael Devine and Johnny Orr.
Tickets are $35 and may be obtained from Marie Monsees at 919-553-5289 or any Woman’s Club member. Prices include soda, water and tea. Beer and wine will be available for purchase.
